FORMAL EVENT STYLE GUIDE

What should I wear to a formal event?

When dressing for any formal occasion, keep in mind the following. "It is better to be over-dressed than under-dressed". The first thing you need to do is look at the invitation. For Invitations that clearly state, "Black Tie", a tuxedo must be worn. Purchasing a tuxedo and formal wear items might be a wise decision if there is a good chance that you will be attending many formal events in the future.

For "Black Tie Optional" and for events that do not specify a dress code, you can't go wrong with a fine suit. It has become very acceptable to wear a nice black or dark navy suit with a white straight collar shirt and a black, silver or charcoal tie. Many men find this to be a great option since this suit can be dressed down and therefore have multiple uses. This should be worn with black shoes and socks. Also consider wearing a French cuff dress shirt and cufflinks. These items are considered to be more elegant and would be very appropriate to wear to a formal dinner.
