HOW TO STYLE SHIRTS AND SUIT COLLAR TYPES

Should I wear a buttondown shirt with a suit?

The buttondown collar is perhaps the most prevalent and versatile collar style available. It is less formal than other collar styles but it is still appropriate with a suit.

You might consider a dressier shirt collar (straight or spread) if you are wearing a more formal looking suit. Also, traditional men's style dictates that if you are wearing a dark suit and it is after 6pm that a straight or spread collar is more traditionally correct.
