We call our spread-collar shirt the Windsor. Does that mean it requires a Windsor knot? Yes and no. A spread collar is classically best with a bulkier tie knot filling up the space. Sometimes a tie made from extra-thick material will do the trick, while other times you'll want to use a tying technique that provides a wider knot, of which the Windsor is probably the best known example.
